Loanee watch - Pedro Porro (Sporting CP - Portugal)

Updated: Oct 28, 2021

Everyone knows that we have a great number of players on loan, some because they must grow before they get their shot at the first team, others because they’re just not good enough at the time being and due to that they get loaned out so their value rises and the club can make a profit on them.

Well, let me tell you about one of our loanees: Pedro Porro. The Spanish right-back joined Man City from Girona for €12m back in the 2018/2019 season, where at the time he was 19 years old. Since then he spent one year on loan at Real Valladolid, and he is now going through his second spell at Sporting CP, in Portugal.

Although his time at Valladolid wasn’t anything crazy, we can’t say the same about his time in Lisbon. In his first year at Sporting, he was one of the key parts of a team that won the League Cup and the Portuguese Championship. He helped Sporting win the title for the first time in 19 years, in a league dominated by SL Benfica and FC Porto.

The Spaniard really came alive under the management of Rúben Amorim, the mastermind behind Sporting’s success last season. Porro got his confidence really high and everyone was able to see it. He finished the season with 6 goals and 3 assists, but his work rate was what made him stand out the most. He has a mix of Cancelo’s vision, dribbling, passing and crossing ability, and Walker’s defense positioning. He showed time and time again how high his footballing I.Q. is and this season he is also keeping his numbers up having already scored 2 goals and made 1 assist in the first 8 games of the Portuguese league.

What’s the problem for Porro at the moment?

Walker and Cancelo are the problem. It’s almost impossible for Porro to get a shot at the first team when his ‘rivals’ are the best right-backs in the Premier League.

Will we see Porro in a Man City top anytime soon?

We could, but it will take a while. Sporting has a buy-option with a fee of around €7.5m and according to the Portuguese news outlets, they will trigger it by the end of this season. But don’t let that get you hopeless when it comes to Porro, because according to a lot of reliable reports, in case Sporting does trigger the buy-option, Man City will also have a buy-back clause with a fee of around €17m. At the moment, there hasn’t been any confirmation if this clause will have a date limit, but if it doesn’t we might see Porro in a Man City kit after Kyle gets a bit older.

At the age of 22, Porro has already made his first internationalization for the Spanish National Team and he seems like a solid choice for Luis Enrique, since he keeps naming him in every call-up. After being called up to the Spanish squad there have been some reports that Real Madrid has been scouting him and there might be a chance of ‘Los Blancos’ making an official bid during the 2022 summer window.

Valued at €20m, Pedro Porro might be one of our most bright and underrated loanees, and I do believe every Cityzen should keep their eyes on this young star because he will definitely shine in a near future.
